Ferries delayed and trees blocking roads after high winds batter Kent

Scaffolding has toppled, ferries to France have been disrupted and roads blocked by fallen trees after high winds battered the county overnight.

Scaffolding has become unsafe and has fallen from a building being demolished in the centre of Rainham.

Police closed Station Road, Rainham, at its junction with Solomon Road after the scaffolding fell from the former Paynes Car Accessory store, which is in the process of being pulled down.

It's not clear what time it fell, but police were called out to the road at about 6.51am.

The road was reopened at 1.30pm.

Highways officials have also been called to the scene and the road closure, near to Rainham Railway Station, is causing problems for commuters trying to get to the station to get on their trains.

The road has been closed because some scaffolding has fallen in Station Road, Rainham.

Medway Council's building control officials are also at the scene working to make the area safe.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have also been notified of the scaffolding collapse.

A spokesperson for HSE said: "HSE is aware of this incident and inspectors are on site assisting Police and building control with their enquiries."

It comes after a yellow weather warning for wind was slapped on Kent, which has caused some disruption.

Both DFDS and P&O Ferries are experiencing delays of around an hour due to the weather.

Meanwhile, in Stelling Minnis, Stone Street is partially blocked in both directions due to a fallen tree near Curtis Lane.

In Bonnington, Gigger's Green Road is blocked in both directions due to a fallen tree between Lower Wall Road and B2067.
