Derelict building fire in Chatham

Firefighters were called to a fire at a disused golf centre yesterday.

The blaze broke out in the roof of the derelict Chatham Golf Centre shop in Street End Road, in the afternoon before crews were called at around 5pm.

No injuries have been reported and the cause is not yet known, although fire crews say arson is suspected.

Police also attended the scene.

The fire caused extensive damage to the building's rafters and smoke damage throughout, while crews also had to cut parts of the building away.

In April this year Medway Council approved a controversial plan to build 131 homes on the former golf centre site.
