Chatham Grammar School pupils evacuated as firefighters put out blaze on grounds in Rainham Road, Chatham

Students - some doing exams - were evacuated on to the playing field at Chatham Grammar after a bonfire from a nearby garden spread into the school grounds this morning.

Up to 300 girls were forced out of lessons just before 11am after the fire from a house on the A2 got to within six feet of a classroom.

The blaze, in undergrowth, was out within 20 minutes, but created lots of smoke.
