The roof of the building has been completely destroyed.

The pavilion is thought to be on Ministry of Defence land and nobody was inside the building at the time.

Natasha Smith, who lives near Medway Maritime Hospital, said she could smell the burning from Gillingham High Street.

The 41-year-old said: “We went shopping and we could smell burning. As we walked up we saw the smoke and the fire.

“I’ve been here about 40 minutes and the fire is still not under control yet.

“No-one has said anything to us about how it started.”

She added: “We come over here and play on the field quite a bit.”

Residents were asked to keep their doors and windows closed as a precaution due to the large amount of smoke coming from the pavilion.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service said the areas affected were the middle to lower Gillingham area and that Medway Park may also be affected.

Firefighters left the scene at around 4pm.
