Freezing Medway weather

Medway continued to struggle with the weather today as the temperatures plunged below freezing.

Snow-covered roads became even more treacherous due to the ice and police repeated warnings for people not to travel unless they have to.

One of the worst spots has been at the top of the A229 Blue Bell Hill, where car has overturned at the slip road for the M2 at Buckmore Park, Chatham.

The M2 is passable with care but tbere has been a collision near the Medway Services at Gillingham. There has also been an accident between junction three for Chatham and two (Cuxton), London-bound, where a vehicle has collided with the central reservation. One lane of the Wainscott bypass is open

The situation on the trains is not much better with Southeastern operating a severely reduced timetable this morning. There are no services on the Medway Valley Line or between Rochester and Swanley.

Some bus services are now running. For more information go to www.medway.gov.uk/buses.

A number of secondary roads have been blocked by drifting snow and Medway Council has hired a JCB digger to dig out these roads including at High Halstow, Cooling and the A228. These were then followed by a snow plough and gritter.

The JCB is now being used to clear the coach park at Gas House Lane, Rochester, for the weekend’s Dickensian Festival.

There will be no waste or recycling collections today and Medway’s waste recycling centres are currently closed.

Many schools are closed again - some for the fourth day in a row. For a full list of school closures, visit www.kmfm.co.uk. Click here for a snow special report.

The closures mean a lot of Christmas events have had to be called off - Woodlands Primary School in Gillingham has cancelled its Christmas fair that was due to take place today while St Mary's RC Primary, Gillingham, has moved its school fair from tomorrow, Saturday, until December 11.

Also called off is the Rainham Christmas lights switch-on and Rupert Bear's visit to Rainham Library and tomorrow night's concert by the Medway Singers at Rochester Parish Church.
