Gillingham squad visit children's ward at Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham to deliver presents

Gills players only had one game plan when they visited the children’s ward at Medway Maritime Hospital on Tuesday – to deliver lots of presents.

The footballers brought smiles to the faces of sick children who are spending the festive period in hospital.

Ann McKinnon, play specialist at the hospital, said: "The children loved meeting the footballers and it was a complete surprise to them all.

"We welcome the team on to the ward every Christmas and they really cheer the children up by taking the time to chat to them and give out Christmas presents.

She added: "We really appreciate them giving up their time to visit our young patients."

The Gills spent an hour at the hospital and by the time they left had gained a new following of young fans.

A spokesman for the club said: "Everyone at Gillingham Football Club would like to say thank you to all the friends we made at the Medway Maritime Hospital and wish all the children, parents and staff a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year."
