Stair-fall gran Paula Robbins saved by grandson Oscar Richardson’s 999 call in Wainscott

A grandmother has praised the quick-thinking efforts of her grandson after she fell down a flight of stairs in the early hours of the morning.

Paula Robbins was at her daughter’s home in Wainscott when she plunged from the top to bottom and was unable to move.

As she lay in agony on the hallway floor, Oscar, aged eight, heard her screams and leapt out of bed to help her.

He grabbed his gran’s phone, dialled 999 and calmly answered the operator’s questions while paramedics rushed to the house in Wainscott Road.

Mrs Robbins, 61, of Admiralty Terrace, Upnor, said: “I’ve had a bad chest lately and I was struggling to breathe. After he called an ambulance he then found his mum’s number to tell her what had happened.”

Mrs Robbins had been looking after Oscar and his two cousins – Freddie, five, and Buddy, three – while daughter Frankie was on a night out with her sister Charlie and friends.

Frankie, of Gold Drive, Wainscott, arrived back at her sister’s home to find their mum on a stretcher with an ambulance crew preparing to take her to Medway Maritime Hospital.

Oscar, who goes to Wainscott Primary School, was comforting his nan, while she was given strong painkillers.

Unbelievably, after escaping with severe bruising, Mrs Robbins was discharged from the emergency department several hours later.

The late-night drama unfolded when she went upstairs to get a dummy for Buddy. Mrs Robbins, who is married to Eric, 64, said: “The stairs are very steep. I was in so much pain. I can’t believe I did not break any bones.

“I am very proud of Oscar. He did all the right things. I would have had to have laid there until the girls got home otherwise.

“Frankly, I don’t know what I would have done without Oscar.”

Frankie, who also has a daughter, Orla, three, said : “Oscar is my little hero. I am a proud mum.”
