Rochester Castle went back in time over the weekend for some medieval merriment.

The annual festivities were as popular as ever, with plenty of families turning out during the two days.

Among the attractions were archery and falconry, jesters, and a trebuchet – a weapon which was used for throwing objects at the enemy.

Medway Council organised the event, which was free to attend and provided the perfect excuse to get out and enjoy the warm weather.

Heritage officer Abby Found said: “It went really well and we had really good numbers.

“We had the Medieval Siege Society down here, The Lions and Lilies re-enactment group, Kester the Jester, and Sky Birds of Prey.”

Cllr Howard Doe, Medway Council’s head of community services, said: “Rochester Castle is the perfect setting for the Medieval Merriment event. Steeped in history, the castle gardens allowed thousands of families to travel back in time to an era full of knights and jesters.

“There was lots going on during the two-day event, from falconry displays to living history demonstrations, as well as a siege engine firing cabbages.”
