Homeless Kawsor Ahmed, 37, charged with burglary offences after police chase

A homeless man has been charged with burglary offences after an off duty police officer spotted him walking in Gillingham.

Kawsor Ahmed, 37, was wanted in connection with a burglaries in the town which were committed in March.

Ahmed, of no fixed address, was spotted at about 12.35pm on Tuesday, April 25, by the off-duty officer walking in The Strand Leisure Park.

Patrols were called to attend the area and, following a search, Ahmed was located in a nearby area of woodland.

A pursuit on foot followed before he was arrested in nearby Pier Road and as he was being detained, he is alleged to have assaulted a police officer.

He has since been charged with, a burglary at a home in Waterside Lane, Gillingham, on Tuesday, April 25 where jewellery, watches and mobile phones were among items stolen.

Ahmed has also been charged with breaking into a shop in High Street, Gillingham, on March 19, and attempted burglary at a home in Garden Street, Gillingham on March 17, and assaulting the police officer.

Ahmed appeared at Medway Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, April 26 and he was remanded in custody and his cases were sent to Maidstone Crown Court to be dealt with.

A date for the hearing is yet to be set.
