Secret climber on the edge after climbing Rochester Bridge and Rochester Cathedral

More than 150ft above the world, urban climber “Straw” looks down on Chatham’s Historic Dockyard from a perspective few will ever see.

Pictured here on top of the tower block in Melville Court, Brompton, Straw didn’t want to give his real name but decided to share his newfound passion for climbing.

“Being obsessed with it, I climb what I can, and in Medway Towns, there isn’t exactly much to scale,” he wrote.

“When scaffolding was placed alongside the tower block, it was an opportunity not to be missed and at the same time, a great place to take some photos of Chatham’s Historic Dockyard.”

The 23-year-old from Strood explained he began climbing in February after watching some YouTube videos.

He said: “I thought I’d try it myself and I made it an obsession. I’d never been rock-climbing or anything like that. It’s not the same thing. I prefer the urban environment.

“I think it’s because it’s not been designed that way. People never think about standing on the ledge and looking at things that way.

“It’s a different perspective.”

Straw, who lives in Strood and went to Temple School, is unemployed. He said he never got much out of education.

But climbing and photography has become a new focus.

" I just love it. There’s nothing else that compares to it. I wish I could stay up there forever" - Straw

So far he’s climbed up a number of structures in London and Medway including Rochester Bridge and Rochester Cathedral, although he adds of the latter: “There was quite a lot of people looking so I don’t want to do that again. I don’t want people getting the wrong idea, like I’m a jumper.

"I’ve been in a bit of trouble when I’ve climbed certain things before, but not serious trouble.

“It was more down to the security staff because I’d climbed too many times on one site so they called the police.”

Describing the feeling of standing on a high ledge, he said: “That’s something I can’t put into words. I just love it. There’s nothing else that compares to it. I wish I could stay up there forever.”

Police said they could not comment on Straw’s exploits without specific details of time and place.
