Lorry overturns and crashes into vehicles on M2 near Chatham

A lorry overturned and smashed into two other vehicles on the M2.

The pile-up happened on the London-bound stretch of the motorway between junction 3 for Chatham and Maidstone and junction 2 for Strood just before 9am.

The carriageway was completely closed while emergency services dealt with the incident, but one lane reopened at around 11am. It was clear by 12.30pm.

Police, firefighters and ambulance crews were called to the scene.

At one point, traffic queued for five miles.

No one was seriously injured.

There is also a huge diesel spill on the road.

A police spokesman said: "Kent Police was called at 8.54am on Friday 6 May to a report that a lorry had overturned on the Londonbound carriageway of the M2 between junctions 3 and 2. It is reported that a lorry and two cars collided.

"The carriageway was closed to allow emergency services to deal with the incident. One lane has been reopened to allow traffic to pass the scene.

"Highways officers are currently at the scene to clear any debris on the carriageway.

"South East Coast Ambulance Service attended and any injuries suffered are thought to have been minor.

"Kent Fire and Rescue Service also attended."

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman added: "Emergency services are at the scene of a crash on the M2 just before the Medway Bridge London-bound.

"The collision involves a car and a HGV, which is on its side. No one is trapped but fire crews were called to assist with a fuel and oil leak from the HGV, which has now been contained.

"The road was closed but Kent Police have now opened one lane of the motorway."
