The motorway was closed coast-bound between junctions two for Rochester and West Malling and three for Chatham and Maidstone at around 9am.

Just before midday, the closure was extended back to junction 1 for Strood to allow investigation work to continue.

The road had reopened by 1.30pm.

Police, ambulance, and fire crews were called to the scene this morning.

Both sides of the carriageway were closed to allow the air ambulance to land at around 9am.

Police spokesman Vicki Foster said: "Kent Police was called at 9.10am on Thursday 1 February to a report of a vehicle on its roof between Junctions 2 and 3 on the M2."

The fire service say they were called at around 9.10am after a car was believed to be smoking.

They had left the scene at 10am.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or the vehicle prior to the collision, and has not yet spoken to an officer, is asked to call 01622 798 538 quoting reference DS/GD/016/18.
