Strood man jailed for breaking Good Samaritan's jaw

A Good Samaritan went to the aid of a woman being threatened by her partner and ended up with a broken jaw, a court heard.

Gordon McIntosh lashed out at Craig Billington in the street and caused the serious injury.

Maidstone Crown Court was told McIntosh’s partner had too much to drink while out in Gillingham on May 27 last year and Mr Billington tried to assist her.

McIntosh, 51, behaved in “a menacing and unpleasant way” towards her, causing the victim to fear for her safety.

“He intervened and you punched him extremely hard in the face and jaw,” said Judge Charles Macdonald QC. “It was a single punch that broke his jaw in two places.”

The victim needed specialist surgery at the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead.

McIntosh, of St Francis Close, Strood, admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Imposing 16 months imprisonment, Judge Macdonald said the offence had “unpleasant overtones” of domestic violence committed by McIntosh on his ex-wife in 2016.

“I don’t accept there is much remorse here,” he said. “The prospects of rehabilitation remain moot, so it is going to be custody.”
