Police and ambulance crew called outside WHSmith in Gillingham High Street after reports a man had been assaulted

Police are investigating reports a man was assaulted in Gillingham High Street yesterday.

Officers and an ambulance crew were sent to the High Street, outside WHSmith, just after 3pm.

The man, who is thought to be in his fifties, suffered head injuries and was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital as a priority patient.

His injuries are believed to be serious, but not life threatening.

Catherine Tanton was in the High Street at the time of the incident.

She said: "You could tell that something was going on. I saw all these people running.

"People started to try and wake him up and people were calling ambulances."

It is thought police cordoned off the area after the man was taken to hospital.

A police spokesman said: “Inquiries are ongoing into the circumstances of the incident.”
