Molly McLaren fundraiser at Medway Park in Gillingham

A fundraisier will be held today in memory of student Molly McLaren.

The 23-year-old, who lived in Cobham and was a former student at North Kent College in Dartford, died in June when she was stabbed in the car park of Chatham’s Dockside Outlet centre.

Her family and friends have since set up a foundation in her name – aimed at raising cash for charities supporting people with eating disorders. Molly, a University of Kent student when she died, had suffered with the illness.

Molly was studying exercise, sport and health education and before her death she had just enrolled on a personal training course.

Her friends have used Molly’s passion for sport and fitness as the inspiration for the fundraiser Medway Moves for Molly which takes place from 11am to 3pm today at Medway Park leisure centre in Gillingham.

Free exercise classes will be on offer with music provided by a live DJ.

Deliciously Ella and Vital Coconut Water will be among the health and wellbeing brands offering samples on the day. A luxury raffle could see people winning a signed cookbook from Jo Wicks and Leeds Castle family tickets.

There will be spin classes, soft play, bungee runs and face painting.

Entry for the event is £5 but free for children under 5 and includes access to one fitness class.

A JustGiving Page was set up after Molly’s death and has reached more than £15,000. Her family and friends are in the process of registering The Molly McLaren Foundation as a charity so they can continue to raise money and awareness.

The next event will be Let’s Chat when a guest speaker from B-eat, a charity supporting people with an eating disorder, will be talking about how to identify the signs, approach the topic and where to get support and services the charity offered.

It will be held at the Deep End Student Hub, Medway Campus of the University of Kent on October 27 from 7pm-8pm and is free to attend.

There will be music from Hot House from 8pm until late.

Joshua Stimpson, 26, of High Street, Wouldham, has been charged with the student’s murder. He is due to enter a plea at Maidstone Crown Court on December 1.
