Rescue dog Lola wins award for visiting care homes in Gillingham

A dog has been recognised for her hard work in the community.

Lola, a husky-akita cross, works with her owner Trudy Christian, in conjunction with Canine Concern, visiting care homes in Gillingham, including the dementia unit at Age Concern.

The pet has now been awarded a certificate of achievement by the charity for her hard work and dedication to helping those in need.

The eight-year-old dog has been working with the team for three years and works with her owner as much as possible.

Mrs Christian said: “She does her job by just being Lola. She brings so much love and joy to whoever she sees. She calms and reassures people.”

Lola is also a regular visitor at Gillingham Methodist Church where she has her own column in their magazine titled Lola News, and she even has her own bus pass to help her get around.

Rescued by Mrs Christian from a nearby kennel after she was found badly beaten and abandoned, the two have been inseparable ever since.

The nursery worker is adamant that Lola picked them and not the other way around.

She said: “What can I say about Lola? Other than that she is an amazing dog.

“She has changed my life and made her mark, her paw print, in this world, from being rescued to rescuing others, including myself. We work together when we can.”

Mrs Christian hopes their visits help those who are feeling lonely or unwell to feel a sense of comfort and make them happier.

She said: “I am very proud of Lola and all that she has achieved. She is truly unique.”

Earlier this year, grandmother Mrs Christian was awarded a Pride in Medway award for her community efforts.

As well as working with Lola, she helps out at a pre-school and runs the 14th Gillingham and Rainham Rainbow Girlguiding group.

She also runs a Sunday school at Gillingham Methodist Church where she worships.
