It is understood the rider did not need to go to hospital for treatment and Highways officials were called out to the road as it was reported oil was on carriageway.

It is not clear if the oil spill was as a result of the accident or if it played any part in the rider coming off his bike.

The incident caused delays for motorists heading out to the Hoo Peninsula and queues from on Four Elms Hill.

A police spokesman confirmed officers were called out to the area at 6.05pm and said lane closures were temporarily enforced.
