Rochester’s bridges will be closed to traffic in both directions because of resurfacing works.

Rochester’s bridges will be closed to traffic because of resurfacing works.

To facilitate council’s work on Strood High Street, there will be a series of overnight closures of the approach roads to the bridges, meaning the bridges will be out of use.

Today (Monday) there will be no access to either bridge between Rochester and Strood from 9pm until 5.30am.

From tomorrow to Thursday, the access to the New Bridge carrying traffic from Strood to Rochester will be closed from 9pm until 5.30am.

A signed diversion will be in place, directing traffic through the A289 Medway Tunnel where necessary.

Pedestrians will still be able to cross the bridges.

The Rochester Bridge Trust will use the closures as an opportunity to repaint lines on the New Bridge and carry out carriageway inspections on both crossings.

Tim Belcher-Whyte, one of the bridge engineers said: “We plan to use the unavoidable closures of access to the Rochester bridges by Medway Council as an opportunity to carry out some essential maintenance of our own to minimise delays to the travelling public.”
