Rainham: Wetherspoon in second bid to take over The Railway

Pub giant JD Wetherspoon has resubmitted plans to reopen a disused pub.

The chain wants to bring The Railway in Station Road, Rainham, back into use, but their original proposals received several objections from those living nearby.

The application was then rejected by the council planning committee in June last year.

Neighbours objected to the proposed roof garden, loss of light, outlook and privacy and an unacceptable level of noise and disturbance.

Planners refused the scheme as the extension would be out of proportion with the main building and fail to respect the character of the surrounding area and harm the street scene. There would also be a loss of trees.

The new plans do not include a roof garden and the extension is lower in height..

The Railway closed in 2012 after the owners, Sarumdale pub group, went bust and a year later the boarded-up building was sold to an unknown buyer by administrators Begbies Traynor. It was then purchased by the Wetherspoon group.

If the pub gets the go ahead, it will trade between 7am and 3am, Sunday to Wednesday, and between 7am and 1.30am, Thursday to Saturday, with an extra hour on the Thursday before Easter weekend, Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and all Sundays before a Bank Holiday.

People can have their say on the new plans until March 10. Visit www.medway.gov.uk. The application number is MC/17/0405.
