Rush hour tailbacks on A2 Watling Street after car overturns at Wainscott bypass

Tailbacks have now cleared after a car crashed into a lamppost and overturned on the Wainscott bypass.

The crash happened on the A289 slip road onto the A2 Watling Street near Higham just before 4pm.

The A289 London-bound was closed and traffic backed up across parts of Medway, with the City Estate particularly badly affected.

The car was on its roof, and a 66-year-old woman had to be freed by firefighters.

A police spokesman said: "Kent Police was called at 3.50pm to a report that a vehicle had collided with a lamppost on the Wainscott Bypass.

"The driver, a female, has been taken to hospital and the road has been closed from the Four Elms roundabout and A2 slip road while damage to the lamppost is dealt with."

A spokesman from Strood fire station added: "Three fire engines attended. We took her out of the back of vehicle but she did not need to be cut free.

"A critical care paramedic was on the scene, who administered first aid. She was then taken to hospital with suspected spinal injuries."
