Paramedics and police were also at the scene and firefighters attended after reports that someone may have been trapped.

Rush-hour traffic backed up in all the surrounding roads, but started to ease after the road re-opened at about 6pm.

Mark Reckless, who stood down as Rochester and Strood MP this week after defecting to UKIP, was among those caught up in the jams.

He tweeted: "Thank you to all the fire crew and Kent air ambulance who are attending an incident on A228 in Chattenden."
