Aldi to open third Medway store on Gillingham Business Park next month

An Aldi superstore will be opening on Gillingham Business Park next month, creating 30 jobs.

The new supermarket in Ambley Road is due to start trading on Thursday, September 28, in a unit next to the new Harveys furniture store.

It will bring the number of the discount stores to three across Medway with the German chain currently in looking at opening a fourth at Horsted Retail Park in Chatham.

An Aldi spokesman said: “We look forward to opening our new store and helping customers to shop and save closer to home.”

The store is 1,254sqm and will be open from 8am until 10pm.

Rumours about Aldi moving to the business park started two years ago, but, for the most, the German giant has remained tight-lipped.

Then a planning application was submitted to Medway Council to alter three of the units at the retail section of the park in Ambley Road, to make way for the popular supermarket.

Property owner Blackrock UK applied to demolish unit five, which was empty, and unit six, which was home to furniture retailer Harveys, and to extend unit four, which was also empty. Units four and five were previously occupied by Paul Simon and Ashford Beds, which closed in 2014.

The proposal was originally to create a unit for Aldi and one for the homeware retailer Dunelm, while Harveys intended to move out.

But the blueprints were revised because Harveys decided it wanted to stay on but downsize. Harveys has now moved into one of the reconfigured units. Aldi already has branches in Duncan Road, Gillingham, and Friary Place in Strood.

The discount chain was in the news last week after it was announced it would be selling a new, low-cost wine range with bottles priced at just £2.99. The collection features bottles with only half the calories and a lower alcohol percentage than regular wines.
