Tourist attraction HMS Cavalier needs your lottery vote

Sorry, this video asset has been removed.

A popular visitor attraction has made it through to the
finals of The National Lottery Awards 2010 and needs your vote.

HMS Cavalier at Chatham's Historic Dockyard is one of only three
projects to make it through to the awards' Best Education Project
category.

All projects shortlisted have already received lottery funding
and the awards celebrate how they have put the money to good
use.

The winners in each of seven categories will receive national
recognition and a £2,000 cash prize.

HMS Cavalier was the Royal Navy's last operational Second World
War destroyer and until 1999, was rotting in a dry dock on
Tyneside.

The ship was acquired for preservation and display at The
Historic Dockyard, Chatham as the National Destroyer Memorial
dedicated to the 143 British destroyers and 11,000 sailors lost at
sea during the Second World War.

Now restored, HMS Cavalier is a major heritage attraction and
the focus of a range of educational programmes aimed at engaging
children and young people.

Alec Cheyney, ships volunteer at the Historic Dockyard, said:
"We are absolutely delighted to have made it to the final of The
National Lottery Awards and want to thank everyone who has
supported us so far.

"Lottery funding has made a real difference to our project,
helping us to preserve and adapt this amazing ship.

It is touching to think that this incredible ship - a memorial
to the men who perished on destroyers during World War Two - now
has a vital new role in the education of young people. We really
hope the public gets behind us and votes for HMS Cavalier to win so
that our staff and volunteers receive the recognition they
deserve."

Voting starts at 9am today, and ends at noon on August 13.
The winner will be announced at an awards event, broadcast on BBC1
in September.
