Medway and Kent secondary school league tables released for 2015

Medway secondary schools performed above the county average in the latest GCSE results.

According to official league tables from the Department for Education, 57.8% of pupils in Medway achieved at least five A*-C grades including English and maths last year. The Kent average is 57.3%.

But the tables show four schools in the Towns are below the government’s so-called floor target for 40%.

This includes The Robert Napier School, where only 26% of pupils reached the standard, while 34% did so at St John Fisher Catholic Comprehensive School, with Brompton Academy at 39% and The Victory Academy, formerly The Bishop of Rochester Academy on 38%.

Rochester Grammar School is leading the way in the Towns for both GSCE and A-level results – with 100% of pupils achieving three or more A*-E A-levels and 99% of GCSE pupils gaining five of more A*-C grades.

A-level pupils at Rochester Math School are also celebrating, after 99% achieved three A*-E grades in their A-level results, well above the Medway average of 59%.

At Chatham Grammar School for Boys, 99% of pupils achieved at least five A*-C GCSE grades and 91% of A-level students gained three A*-E grades. It is more good news for the school after having been put into special measures in June 2013.

Juliet Diaz, head of the school, which is now rated good by Ofsted, said: “I am delighted for our students that their efforts and hard work have been rewarded with excellent GCSE results which are the best the school has ever achieved.

“This school has been on a steep curve of improvement over the past two years which has shown itself in a number of ways including a large
increase in the proportion of A*/A grades.

“These top grades are allowing our students to access challenging academic A-levels, which in turn are enabling them to go on to the very best universities. These are good days at Chatham Grammar School for Boys and we have a lot of momentum, which I fully expect will lead to further improvements in the future.”

The percentage of disadvantaged pupils in Medway who achieved at least five GCSE A*-C grades, including English and maths, was 36.4%, beating the county average of 30.5%.

The Robert Napier School came bottom in Medway for GCSE results as only 26% of pupils reached the target A*-Cs. The Thomas Aveling School received the lowest A-level results figure with only 12% of students achieving three A*-E grades, but the table does not take into account other vocational courses which the school offers.

Cllr Mike O'Brien, head of children's services at Medway Council, said: "I would like to congratulate young people in Medway who have worked hard this year to achieve these results.

"I am pleased Medway remains above the national average for the percentage of students achieving five or more GCSE passes at grades A* to C including English and maths, and also above the average for all except one of our statistical neighbours.”
