Walderslade householders desperate to get to root of tree dispute after 50ft leylandii comes down in Harptree Drive in strong winds

A fallen tree has been lying against a house for more than two weeks... because neighbours cannot agree on who should move it.

Heidi Brett was in the kitchen of her home in Harptree Drive, Walderslade, when she heard something hit the back door.

As she looked out the window, she found the 50ft leylandii had come down in strong winds against her house.

The tree is still there because the neighbour who planted it has refused to remove it, according to Ms Brett.

She said: "The owner says as it is now on my land, it is my responsibility to get it moved.

"Surely if you own something and it breaks or damages someone else's property then it's the owner's responsibility to fix it?

"I'm in a stalemate now because my landlord is refusing to pay for it because it's not his tree, which I understand.

"It is a nightmare. This is a big tree. It was taller than our three-storey house."

Ms Brett said she will not know how much damage has been done to the property until the Leylandii tree is removed.

She said: "Bits of bricks are falling off and landing in my garden and the branches are getting droopy and falling off too.

"There is water running down inside of the loft space too. It's getting more dangerous the longer it is left there."

It has also blocked the windows of her neighbour Geoff Blackman, who said he sent a letter to the owners of the tree in 2008, outlining his fears about what could happen to the tree in strong winds.

But owner Sheila Stenning said: "It is not our responsibility because it is in their property and I have spoken to our insurance company multiple times about it.

"Their insurance company has to get it removed and then they can recover the costs."
