Wetherspoon's Thomas Waghorn pub in Chatham bans tracksuits

Is it a wise business move to ban tracksuits from a pub in Chatham town centre?

The controversial decision has been made by the Thomas Waghorn – the new Wetherspoon pub in Railway Street – that has implemented a dress code that also bans baseball caps.

Manager Peter Pethers confirmed the news after one would-be customer contacted the Medway Messenger - KentOnline's sister paper - to complain the policy was “disgusting” and "stereotyped people".

However, Mr Pethers is sticking to his guns.

He said: “We have implemented a dress code. No tracksuit bottoms and no baseball caps.”

Didn’t that exclude half of Chatham?

“Yes,” he conceded, “but we’re just trying to get the environment right.”

Wetherspoon has spent over £2.2 million on renovating the former post office which opened its doors in July.

Medway's second Wetherspoon, the pub is appropriately named after the 19th century pioneer who created a new mail route from England to India in the 1800s and is commemorated with a nearby statue.

Watch: What does Chatham think of the ban?

Opening hours are 8am to midnight from Sundays to Thursdays, and 8am to 1am on Fridays and Saturdays, with food served until 11pm.
