World Cup wheelchair rugby league hits Gillingham this summer and local people have been urged to roar the host nation to glory.

Medway Park will host the event, which runs from July 3-13, having drawn a record crowd for last year’s international between England and France.

England assistant coach Mark Roughsedge wants more of the same when his side defend their world champions crown.

He said: "There were 600 people here last time we played France and we want that again, every single game of the tournament. We want some backing for England to get us to the final and get us over the line.

"There’s going to be some incredible athletes from around the world. I’d urge everybody in the Medway area to get behind us. Let’s fill Medway Park."

England’s final squad for the six-team tournament could include Nick Brooks and Joe Coyd, who play their club rugby with Medway Dragons.

England start their World Cup campaign against France on July 3, before tackling further group games against Ireland and Wales. The semi-finals take place on July 11, two days before the final.

Tickets for group matches will cost £4 for adults and £1 for children, although fans can pay £6 (adults) and £1.50 (children) to watch three group games on one day.
