Gillingham boss Ady Pennock on rumours linking Josh Wright with Charlton Athletic

Gillingham boss Ady Pennock insists the club have had no offers for last season’s player-of-the-year.

Speculation was rife during the week that goalscoring midfielder Josh Wright could be heading to Gillingham’s League 1 rivals Charlton Athletic.

“Charlton haven’t come to us,” said Pennock, speaking after Tuesday night’s win at Chatham.

“At the end of last season there was paper talk about Nottingham Forest but nobody has come in and bid and what Josh is doing is keeping his head down and working hard.

“He had 90 minutes (at Chatham on Tuesday) and that was good. I am not surprised clubs are interested in him because if you score 11 or 12 goals from January onwards, anyone who scores that many, there is going to be interest but nobody has phoned the club.

“Rumours are rumours and sometimes there is no smoke without fire but I haven’t heard anything.”

Wright scored twice for the Gills on Tuesday night in their 12-0 win at Chatham.

And the Gills head coach was expecting the 27-year-old to turn up for training as usual today (Thursday).

“He will be in on Thursday and I am not looking any further,” said the Gills boss.

“Anything could happen, if it did it has to be right for the club and Josh. He has been a good professional and it hasn’t affected him.”

Rumours of a potential move to former club Charlton were stoked by a tweet sent out by Josh Wright’s brother Mark, a radio DJ and former star of reality TV programme The Only Way Is Essex.

Mark Wright tweeted to his three million followers: “Whether it’s Gills or Charlton for him this year, it’s 2 clubs that are so close to his heart. That means more to him than anything #history.”

Wright’s goal record from midfield last season meant he was always likely to attract attention this summer. The 27-year-old scored 14 goals for the Gills last season and was named supporters’ player-of-the-year.

He made history during the season by scoring a hat-trick of penalties inside 10 minutes against his former club Scunthorpe United.

By then he had lost the captain’s armband after Pennock opted to hand the on-field responsibility to defender Max Ehmer.

Wright has a year left on his contract.
