Rochester-based light-heavyweight Dan Woodgate seeks sponsorship to assist with preparations ahead of July fight in Medway

One of Kent’s most successful professional boxers is seeking sponsorship ahead of an upcoming clash likely to be televised internationally – as the hard-working builder struggles to go ‘full time’ and making his boxing career pay.

In America, boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather earned an estimated $200 million from his recent victory over Manny Pacquiao. But in Medway where Daniel Woodgate is also preparing for the fight of his life, he can’t afford to take time off work to train enough.

The dad-of-two starts his working day at 4.30am and isn’t home until his daughters are in bed. But to train properly for a gruelling professional clash he needs a minimum of six weeks to concentrate on the clash ahead of him, with a training camp ideally 10 weeks long.

Woodgate, 31, has won all of his fights bar two - he and went on to avenge one of his losses with a third round knockout of opponent Sam Couzens.

It’s a record to be proud of but the big-hearted boxer, who’s raised thousands for charity, has struggled to gain more traction because he needs to put bread on the table for his family.

The light heavyweight, who grew up in Thanet and now lives in Rochester, said: “I don’t even really have a trainer right now. I’m just training myself where and when I can.”

He added: “When I am preparing for a fight I have to get up at around 4.30am and run before work, then I drive for an hour and a half before doing a full day’s work. I come home after a long day, give my wife and girls a quick kiss and get changed, then head to training.”

Woodgate, who’s fighting again on July 11 in Medway and who works his small family business B-Spoke Builders all across the south east, is desperate for a sponsor to step in and help – with the most urgent task finding the £600 for his medicals to get licensed again this year.

He said: “If I was able to give up work for boxing I would be able to rest properly between sessions and focus more on getting the diet and nutrition spot on.

"For a title fight it would usually be a minimum of six weeks off work but preferably 10 weeks to make sure the weight is spot on and I am 100% prepared.

“Training for a fight is physically and emotionally draining but it is what I love and it would be a dream of mine to go full time. I am fighting on the 11th of July in Medway and it’s great to be back fighting in Kent.

"We are not sure who my opponent will be yet as we are aiming to get the biggest title I possibly can, so my manager is working hard to get the right fight but whoever it is I will be prepared and ready.”

Prospective sponsors can call Woodgate on 07807 013 111.
