Manager Justin Edinburgh hoping Gillingham can thrive as hunters rather than the hunted after slipping out of League 1 play-off spots

Gillingham boss Justin Edinburgh hopes dropping out of the play-offs can have a positive effect on his team.

Edinburgh’s men haven’t won in April, dropping to seventh in the table, and are now reliant on other results to go their way while also needing to pick up their own form.

He said: “For the first time this season we are not in a position to do what we want to do. We are reliant on other results, but there is not as much pressure now.

“The pendulum has swung and it is not us trying to hold onto the place, we are trying to grab that place back. There might be a change in mentality that might get us across the line.”

Edinburgh admits that his young team have struggled to cope as the season reaches its climax.

He said: “If I reflect, we have got three players in our team who have been in this position before.

“Bradley Dack and Jake Hessenthaler played a part when this team won the (League 2) championship but their appearances were rare and few and far between.

“We probably only have Stuart Nelson, Cody McDonald and Josh Wright, who have ever been in a position like we are and it has caught up with us, there is no doubt about that.”
