Peter Taylor is hopeful Joe Martin can shake off a groin injury and replace departed Adam Chicksen.

Left-back Chicksen has been recalled by Brighton on the eve of Gillingham’s League 1 match against Doncaster Rovers.

Chicksen, who was signed to cover for suspended Martin, leaves the Gills after just four games following the completion of a minimal 28 day loan period.

Martin’s suspension has been served and he was back training again this week after missing last Saturday’s game with a slight injury.

On Chicksen’s departure, Taylor said: “It is not a problem and I respect Brighton. He has done well.

“We thank him for his quality and quality as a lad as well. He really is a good professional and a good talker. He encouraged the boys and did great.

“His first game was Orient, the first time we played them, and so we have done well with him in the four matches he has played.”

Martin will now step back into the left-back position. He hasn’t played since his dismissal against Crawley in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

“Joe was slightly struggling on Saturday,” said Taylor.

“We didn’t want to take a chance, otherwise he would have been on the bench. He’s trained and we are hopeful he will be fine.”
