Former West Brom striker Andre Wright will be looking to impress Gillingham boss Ady Pennock

Striker Andre Wright is one of several Gilllingham trialists expected to learn their fate after the weekend.

Wright left Premier League West Brom in the summer and has featured in Gills’ opening two pre-season matches.

He is one of several looking to win a deal at Priestfield this summer, although others have already failed to make the grade including defender Danilo Sarkic and midfielder Kamal Ait El Haj.

Boss Ady Pennock said: “They are good players who have played league football and they are at a good age. We will see what happens this week.

“Decisions will be made at the end of the week and we have had a couple of other trialists come on board.

“We are always looking and the agents give me millions of players but the good thing is we know about the trialists who have come in.

“It is a good opportunity to show what they can do and we will make those decisions at the end of this week.”

Pennock has already added six new faces to the squad but would love a couple more.

He said: “The chairman has been backed us and I am pleased. I would love to get a couple more if I can. I am happy but the work hasn’t finished yet.”

Asked if a striker was on his wish list, Pennock said: “I am pleased with the strikers.

“We have Conor Wilkinson, Josh Parker, Greg Cundle up there and Noel Mbo. We have got options and Elliott List can play up there.

“I am fairly happy with what we’ve got at the moment. We have some good players in.”
Many of the younger players have already featured in pre-season and Pennock is delighted to be able to give them a go.

He said: “I love to see the young lads improve. Everyone does and if they are good enough, they will play.

“I thought Finn O’Mara, Ben Chapman and Jack Tucker did well (on Tuesday at Dartford). There were some good performances, everyone did well.”

Also impressing was Bradley Garmston, making another appearance as he returns from an injury-plagued 2016-17.

Pennock said: “Bradley has worked ever so hard in the summer. Even when he was on holiday he was running and strengthening his hamstrings.

“He has come back strong, like they all have.”
