Injuries could prompt Gillingham to make late defensive acquisitions as transfer deadline day looms

Injuries could force Steve Lovell’s hand as the Gills boss has his first taste of transfer deadline day this week.

The Gills have until Wednesday night to complete any signings, with Lovell keen to add former Forest Green striker Rhys Murphy to the squad.

But Alex Lacey and Gabriel Zakuani both picked up injuries against Fleetwood – and that could change Lovell’s plans.

“I think we’ve picked up a couple of knocks so we might need to bring one or two in if the injuries are as bad as I think they are,” said Lovell.

“We’ll see how it goes. I’m a bit concerned with Alex Lacey as he got a nasty one.

“There might be a forward signing as well which I’m looking to do just to bolster the squad really. The two boys up front are doing brilliantly but if we lose them between now and the end of the season to suspension or whatever we’ve got cover but to bring someone who’s a little bit different in, we might try to do something.

“Rhys has done really well. He brings something different."

Zakuani picked up a thigh injury in training last week but got through more than an hour before hobbling off, while Lacey damaged his ankle after coming on as a late substitute.

“I didn’t think Gabriel would play,” said Lovell. “He got injured in training on Tuesday but I thought there’s no way he’d be fit.

“He passed a fitness test on Friday and lasted an hour. It’s not anything serious so I think he’ll be okay.

“You talk about character, Alex Lacey was injured and he was up there at the end with one leg heading balls away. It shows the character that we’ve got.”
