Peter Taylor says keeper Stuart Nelson can still have a role to play at Gillingham

Goalkeeper Stuart Nelson could still have a future at Gillingham, says director of football Peter Taylor.

Nelson is on the transfer list but with no offers forthcoming, he remains fully involved with Gills’ pre-season training.

Taylor said: “All the three goalkeepers are in Ireland working hard. I wouldn’t rule it out that he won’t get into the team.

“If I was Stuart, I wouldn’t want to get back and find out in the middle of pre-season that I may not start. What we have done is given the player a little bit of an option.

“He is still here and nobody has contacted us and Stuart, being a decent professional, will get on with it.”

It’s the third summer in a row that Nelson’s Gillingham future has been in doubt.

In 2015 he was transfer-listed by former boss Justin Edinburgh, before winning him around with a great pre-season.

By the end of that season, Edinburgh was offering him a new deal but he came close to joining Southend United before eventually signing a new two-year contract.

Taylor believes everyone has a chance.

He said: “It is a clean slate. Last year was a poor one for Gillingham.

“Everyone let themselves down and we have to improve but on the strength of last year, those players will never want to go through that again.”
