The hard work starts now for Gillingham manager Justin Edinburgh.

Sunday's 3-1 victory over Notts County lifted Gills up to 12th – their best finish since dropping out of the Championship a decade ago – and Edinburgh was back in the office on Monday plotting a way to make the 2015-16 season even better.

He said: “We have a nucleus of young players that have been terrific since I have been here and it is only going to stand us in real good stead going forward.

“I think we have a lot to look forward to, without getting carried away or losing sight of the club as a whole.

“I am really looking forward to when the real tough job starts in terms of recruitment and I am licking my lips and looking forward to the next eight weeks.”

One of his first jobs is to decide which out of contract players he plans to let go.

Left-back Joe Martin has already announced his departure on Twitter, but goalkeeper Glenn Morris and defender Leon Legge – who both started against Notts County – are also out of contract this summer, along with Gavin Hoyte and Danny Galbraith. An announcement is expected by Wednesday morning.

Edinburgh added: “There are going to be tough decisions to make but that is my job and I have to make them. The decisions will be for the good of the club."
