Stuart Nelson could be offered a new deal at Gillingham by boss Justin Edinburgh

Gills boss Justin Edinburgh is set to offer keeper Stuart Nelson a new deal.

Nelson was made available by Edinburgh last summer, but an impressive pre-season convinced him to change his mind.

The goalkeeper played in every minute of Gills’ season and Edinburgh now wants to extend Nelson’s stay.

Edinburgh said: “You can only go what your eye tells you.

“He wasn’t at his best when I came to the club. We sat and spoke in the summer.

“He came back, was top drawer, first class and he has been one of the best goalkeepers in the league and he is one of the players I want to keep. He would now be first on the team sheet.”

Nelson, 34, joined the Gills in the summer of 2012 and helped the club win the League 2 title under Martin Allen.

He has now made more than 150 league appearances for the club, keeping 14 clean sheets during the last season.

Edinburgh is due to meet his players in the week. Players out of contract include captain Doug Loft, defender John Egan and midfielder Josh Wright.
