Defender John Egan hasn’t forgotten what happened last time Gillingham met Barnsley.

The Irishman admitted the 4-1 scoreline at Oakwell, back in August, was embarrassing and he's hoping to put a few things right on home soil on Saturday.

Egan said: “We didn’t do ourselves justice. We didn’t do well at all. They deservedly beat us and it was a tough one to take because nobody likes losing, especially 4-1, you feel a bit embarrassed.

“We need to make amends for that result and hopefully we can keep making Priestfield a bit of a fortress, so nobody will like coming down here.”

The Gills have won their last three games at home, form that has helped propel them into the race for the play-offs.

Egan said: “We do like playing there and it has shown in our results throughout the season. But no matter where we are playing, we have to go out with the same attitude, the winning mentality.”

Gillingham could have been boasting a four-game winning run had it not been for a late contentious penalty decision at Yeovil last Saturday.

“To concede in the last minute of any game is tough,” said Egan.

“At 2-1 up we felt we would see the game out. The ball broke in the box, there was a coming together, and I thought it was a free-kick for us. The referee pointed to the spot which was very surprising."
