Gillingham’s hardcore fans will be clocking up extra miles this season, covering over 8,000 if they take in all 23 games up and down the country.

Along with Blackburn, newcomers to League 1 include Plymouth, Blackpool, Wigan and Rotherham, games which will see fans spending many hours on the motorways.

Round one of the Carabao Cup takes place immediately after the opening weekend, with the Gills facing a midweek trip to Championship side Reading.

The Checkatrade Trophy starts week commencing August, 28. Gillingham will again be involved in a first round group stage - despite objection from club chairman Paul Scally - facing three teams, including a top-flight under-21 side at Priestfield.

Gillingham will be hoping for a less embarrassing FA Cup experience this time around, after losing on live TV to Brackley Town last season.

The first round takes place on Saturday, November 4 and round two commences on Saturday, December 2.

There will be four games over the festive period, with fixtures lined up for Saturday, December 23, Boxing Day, Saturday, December 30 and New Year’s Day.

The regular season will continue until the first weekend of May, 2018 and the League 1 play-off final takes place at Wembley on Sunday, May 27.

Gillingham’s pre-season campaign gets underway on Friday, July 7, with a trip to Faversham Town.

They follow that up with games against Dartford (Tuesday, July 11), Dover (Saturday, July 15), Chatham Town (Tuesday, July 18), Ipswich Town (Saturday, July 22), Patro Eisden (Tuesday, July 25) and Canvey Island (Saturday, July 29). A potential away friendly against Colchester United (Friday, July 28) has yet to be confirmed.
