Gabriel Zakuani signs for Swindon Town a month after leaving Gillingham

Gabriel Zakuani starts his first match for Swindon Town on Saturday after joining them on a free transfer.

The experienced defender has been without a club since his contract at Gillingham was mutually terminated at the start of September.

Zakuani has joined Swindon on a short-term deal, until January.

He left the Gills having just recovered from an injury picked up towards the end of the previous season.

Playing 69 times for the Gills, he captained them last season, but manager Steve Evans decided the 33-year-old wasn’t for him.

Swindon are currently sitting fifth in League 2 and are at Bradford on Saturday.

Zakuani was keen to remain in the south, tweeting last month: "Why is it only clubs up north ringing down my phone? No demand for no nonsense Row Z Tony Pulis style clean sheets in the South or what?"
