Gillingham defender Bradley Garmston says competition for places is the secret of side's early-season success

Bradley Garmston isn’t sulking about a lack of action.

A brief glimpse of first-team football on Tuesday night saw him make a positive impact, delivering the cross for the winner in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy clash with Luton.

The left-back knows competition for places in the Gills team is hot and he believes that’s been the recipe for success this season.

He said: “I want to play as much as I can and I wish I could play every single minute of every single game for the club. But competition, not just for myself but throughout the squad, is healthy and it does help the team.

“That competition pushes you to perform that little bit more. You work a bit harder in training, work a bit harder in the gym and you have to focus more on your diet.

“All of those percentages add together and it keeps you on your toes. It is a key factor that has contributed to our good start this season, that competition in the squad."

Garmston came off the bench on Tuesday, replacing left-back rival Brennan Dickenson.

“The reason he (Justin Edinburgh) brings you on is to try and change the game and make an impact, that is the big thing for anyone coming on,” Garmston said.

“Whatever minute you come on, everyone is raring to go and ready to make an impact for the team.

“Sometimes it can be a little frustrating when you don’t start a game but whatever opportunity you have, you have to think ‘what can you do to help the team?’ That can only help yourself and maybe put you in contention for more appearances in the future."
