Gillingham or Carlisle United will face Sheffield Wednesday in round three of the FA Cup

Gillingham will face a home tie with Championship side Sheffield Wednesday if they can beat Carlisle United in their FA Cup second round replay.

The draw for the third round of the FA Cup took place on Monday night.

Carlisle held out for a 1-1 draw against the Gills at Priestfield on Saturday to take the tie back to Cumbria.

The date for the replay has yet to be confirmed as the TV games have not been picked yet, but will be some time in the middle of next week.

Gillingham last reached round three in the 2011-12 season, losing 3-1 at home to Tony Pulis' Stoke City.

They were knocked out in the second round the year after, by Preston North End, and since then it's been a story of woe, losing out in first round games to non-league Brackley Town (twice), Bristol City and Stevenage.

The Gills managed to negotiate their way past Leyton Orient in the first round of this year's competition, winning 2-1.

Third round ties take place on the weekend of Saturday, January 6, which means the Gills' scheduled league game at Shrewsbury will have to be moved.

Shrewsbury are already through to round three after beating Morecambe. They play West Ham at home.

The Gills have also confirmed that the Kent Senior Cup game against Maidstone United - which was due to take place on Tuesday, December 12, will now have to be moved, again.
