Gillingham are away to Doncaster Rovers in their League 1 season opener

Gillingham travel to newly promoted Doncaster Rovers for their opening game of the season.

Goals from former Gills striker John Marquis helped propel Doncaster to promotion, finishing third in the League 2 table last season.

The Gills will kick off their 2017/18 campaign on Saturday, August 5.

Bradford missed out on promotion from League 1 last season after losing to Millwall in the play-off final at Wembley.

Inbetween the opening two league matches is the Carabao Cup first round, where the Gills have been handed an away trip to Reading.

Reading missed out on promotion to the Premier League after losing to Huddersfield on penalties in the Championship play-off final.

It’s a tough draw but head coach Ady Pennock doesn’t mind.

He said: “It’s a hard one but it will be played in a fantastic stadium and we’re looking forward to it.

“They were so unlucky not to get promoted and it will be a good test for us. It’s an exciting game to be involved in and a good one for the fans.”

It will be a busy festive period for league teams this season and Gillingham start with a trip to Fleetwood on Saturday, December 23.

They host Oxford United on Boxing Day and welcome AFC Wimbledon to Priestfield on Saturday, December 30. A game at The Valley and Charlton Athletic awaits the Gills on New Year’s Day.

Among the midweek trips is a game at Blackpool on Tuesday, November 21, one of Gillingham’s longest away journeys of the season.

Tuesday night games at Priestfield will see visits from Scunthorpe United and Wigan Athletic.

Former boss Justin Edinburgh will bring his Northampton Town team to Priestfield on Saturday, October 21.

The Gills will end their campaign at home to Plymouth – another of the League 2 promoted teams – facing them on Saturday, May 5 with a 5.30pm kick-off.

The Checkatrade Trophy starts week commencing August, 28. Details of that draw have yet to be confirmed but the Gills will be facing a top-flight under-21 side at Priestfield as part of the first round group stage.

The FA Cup first round takes place on Saturday, November 4 and round two commences on Saturday, December 2.

The League 1 play-off final takes place at Wembley on Sunday, May 27.

Gillingham’s pre-season campaign gets underway on Friday, July 7, with a trip to Faversham Town. Players return from their summer breaks on Friday ahead of a training camp in Northern Ireland.
