Gillingham coach Jamie Day says they are still working hard on the defence

Gillingham still have room for improvement according to coach Jamie Day.

While the Gills have been scoring plenty over the summer, the goals they have conceded haven’t gone unnoticed.

And the coaching staff are working hard to put any faults right before the season kicks off at Doncaster on August 5.

Speaking after the 4-1 win over Patro Eisden, Day said: “It was a good workout but we were a little sloppy with their goal. That is part of the process of pre-season and we are slowly ironing them out.

“A couple of times defensively from corners we have been counter attacked and it happened a lot last year, that is something we are still working on and people need to get a bit tighter.

“We moved the ball pretty well, created a number of chances and the boys have worked hard because they trained in the afternoon as well. It is good minutes for them and some sharpening up to go into those two games at the weekend.

“We are taking those chances but on the other side of it we need to make sure we are solid at the back, don’t concede silly goals and keep as many clean sheets as possible. We are looking at both ends and at the minute but we are doing okay.

“For us, we need to look at the goals conceded, to work on them and get it right and so when it comes to the first game those little mistakes we have managed to eradicate and hopefully start the season well.

Goals have come frequently, netting 23 times in their six game.

“It’s good and we have to take that into the start of the season,” said the former Welling manager.

“We are creating chances and we have created some good stuff at times. We have looked more solid defensively and pre-season has gone how we wanted it to go.

“The good thing is that we are creating chances and we want that to continue.”
