Leyton Orient 2 Gillingham 0 - match abandoned after 77 minutes

An injury to Gillingham midfielder Lee Martin led to Saturday’s pre-season match being abandoned.

Martin stretched to shoot and in doing so injured his left leg and was stretchered off.

Both teams and officials decided to end the game early, with 10 minutes left.

Orient had scored their two goals late in the first half to lead a game where Gillingham had seen plenty of the ball.

Home keeper Alex Cisak pulled off a couple of good saves to deny the Gills in the opening 45 minutes.

The Gills were taking part in their final pre-season test against an Orient team managed by Andy Hessenthaler.

Boss Justin Edinburgh was able to welcome Deji Oshilaja back from injury against the League 2 opposition and he made some good early interceptions. He completed 45 minutes.

Gillingham saw plenty of the ball, however, in the opening half hour, bossing proceedings without managing to find a breakthrough.

Former Orient player Josh Wright had the best of those early chances, with a shot from Jake Hessenthaler’s lay-off that looked destined for the top corner, before keeper Cisak tipped it round the woodwork.

Cisak also managed to hold onto a couple of headed efforts from McDonald but strike partner Joe Quigley created an even better chance, with a run in on goal that ended with a shot from Hessenthaler that was well saved.

All of Gillingham’s good early work was undone when Orient took a 32 minute lead. Gavin Massey got the better of Paul Konchesky and his pull-back found striker Jordan Bowery with plenty of space in the box. The finish across Stuart Nelson crept into the far corner.

The Gills struggled to create an opening after falling behind and even Bradley Dack couldn’t help, taking a nibble at Massey after losing the ball in a good position.

Orient added a second goal before the break. Ryan Jackson was harshly adjudged to have fouled Harry Cornick in the box and Jay Simpson beat Nelson from the spot.

Lee Martin replaced Dack at the tip of the midfield diamond for the second half while Emmanuel Osadebe rejoined Max Ehmer in defence, replacing Oshilaja.

Gillingham almost conceded a third early in the half, with Cornick and Bowery passing their way through the defence, but the chance was snuffed out as Nelson saved.

Mark Byrne put a shot narrowly wide for the Gills as a good move down the left involving Konchesky and Martin produced the opportunity but at the other end the defence was opened up by Cornick, finding Bowery who was denied by Nelson.

McDonald put an overhead kick wide for the Gills but Orient went closer, when sub Ollie Palmer headed Dean Cox’s cross onto the post.

With 15 minutes left the Gills were dealt another injury blow. Substitute Lee Martin chased a ball and when stretching to shoot he picked up an injury, leading to a halt in play as a stretcher was brought on the field.

Gillingham: Nelson, Jackson, Konchesky, Ehmer, Oshilaja (Osadebe 46mins), Wright, Hessenthaler (Knott 61mins), Byrne, Dack (Martin 46mins), McDonald, Quigley (Donnelly 61mins). Subs not used: Hadler, Oldaker, List, Cundle.

Attendance: 706 (147 away)
