Gillingham boss Justin Edinburgh hands Josh Wright the captaincy and names Stuart Nelson as deputy

Josh Wright has been handed the Gillingham captaincy.

The 26-year-old midfielder has skippered the side for much of pre-season and was always likely to be handed the role permanently.

Gillingham confirmed his appointment on Tuesday while also revealing that goalkeeper Stuart Nelson would be the new vice captain.

Both Wright and Nelson agreed new two-year deals with the Gills in the summer.

Wright said: “I am honoured, privileged, proud and delighted to be handed the captaincy and I can’t wait to lead this fantastic club and group of players next season and hopefully beyond.

“Playing for such a great club is one thing but being captain tops it off.

“I hope we can make the fans happy next season by being successful and, as captain, I will do everything I can in my powers to make that happen.”

Boss Justin Edinburgh has previously spoken of Wright being captain material.

Earlier this summer Gills fans voted overwhelmingly for Wright to become the new captain following the departure of Doug Loft.

Wright came to the Gills after injuries last summer to midfielders left Edinburgh short of options. He was training at the club while looking for a club and found himself on the bench for the season opener.

He quickly became a popular figure on and off the pitch, becoming a regular starter and playing 44 games.

Edinburgh said: “I am delighted for Josh. I have no doubt that he will be a great leader for this club.”
