Gillingham's Alex Lacey and Conor Wilkinson may be fit for Doncaster opener

Gillingham boss Ady Pennock could have a fully-fit squad to choose from when the season starts on Saturday.

New signings Alex Lacey and Conor Wilkinson have both been major doubts for Doncaster but their chances are improving.

Speaking this week, Pennock said: “I think they will be ready for Saturday.

“They have started to strike some balls and do some twists and turns and they have responded well. We will assess them again.

“They are cutting it fine but they are injuries you can’t really rush. They are sore and tender but they have done well.”

The only definite non-starter is Aaron Morris, who was visiting a specialist on Tuesday in Leeds with the club physio.

Morris has missed pre-season with an injury to the same knee which kept him out of the entire 2016-17 campaign.

With Morris the only major concern, it’s been a pleasing pre-season for Pennock.

He said: “It has gone well. The players have worked hard, there were some minor injuries but no muscle injuries which is promising.

“We haven’t got the biggest squad in the world but it is important we keep them fit and healthy."
