Gillingham boss Justin Edinburgh knows his team need to improve their defending

Gills boss Justin Edinburgh has called for a more ruthless approach to their defending.

A handball in the box cost them a point against Sheffield United on Sunday and they are still searching for their first clean sheet.

Boss Edinburgh said: “We have had a solid start, without being spectacular and we certainly need to be ruthless in our own box, to make sure we don’t concede.

“There have been passages of play that I have liked but we know as a club, certainly from last year, it’s not about what you do in the first 10 games, it’s what you do in 46. That is the key.”

The Gills sit eighth in League 1 but are just four points off the top.

Edinburgh said: “We’ve made 12 new signings. Look at Sheffield United, a club with their resources and the size of them, but we are still above them.

“It takes time. We are striving to improve and to be better. The only improvement we can show is to finish in the top eight and it’s a big ask.

“Let’s not forget who we are, what resources we have, but it is my job to make sure we achieve that, week in week out. It has been a bit stop-start but we will keep working hard to try and get some consistency, that’s the key.”

Edinburgh added: “People with football intelligence understand, those who haven’t won’t. I am not going to ask for patience, I don’t need that. We are doing alright.

“We can do better. We have to make sure we get more consistency. There are some really good things but some things we have to improve on. That is the job and what we have to do as a group.

“I have been here nearly two years and everyone knows how we want to play, the players understand that, it is just about putting those plans into action.

“We have to reflect and continue to work hard and put it right on Saturday (at home to Bradford).”
