Gillingham will be looking to tie up extended loan deals for Max Ehmer and John Marquis before the transfer deadline closes.

They have until 11pm on Monday night if they want to get the pair signed on until the end of the season.

If not, they can still extend their deals, but only up to a maximum of 93 days.

Coach Darren Hare hopes the pair stick around.

He said: “We are hopeful of extending Max Ehmer’s loan and John’s until the end of the season.

“Nothing has been finalised with those.”

Both are on deals until February 7 to include Gills’ game against Sheffield United at Priestfield on Saturday.

Both Ehmer and Marquis have already said they are willing to stay for the rest of the season.

Hare admits the caretaker management team are also looking to strengthen in other departments.

That may depend on whether chairman Paul Scally makes an appointment as permanent successor for Peter Taylor.

“If we were to carry on, we would like to bring in a couple more players,” said Hare.

“But the chairman wouldn’t stop us doing that, if we wanted to do that now.

“If it is the right player, the right position, if it is healthy competition or providing cover, then he would let us go and do it.

“The squad is young, it has good legs in it and we are really happy.

“In terms of business on transfer deadline day I doubt we will be doing too much of that. If we need to bring a loan player in over the coming weeks then we will do it as we need it.”
