Gillingham have signed right-back Ryan Jackson on a two-year deal.

The 24-year-old, who can also operate as a wing-back, links up again with Gills boss Justin Edinburgh, who had the player while at Newport County.

County boss Terry Butcher offered Jackson a new deal at Rodney Parade but he has opted for a switch to the Gills.

Jackson was signed by Edinburgh two years ago, while at Newport, paying compensation to Macclesfield Town for his signature.

He becomes Edinburgh’s first senior acquisition of the summer, having landed youngsters Elliott List and Emmanuel Osadebe in the last few weeks.

Jackson will be a direct replacement for Gavin Hoyte, who Edinburgh decided against keeping at the end of the season.

Streatham-born Jackson started his career as a junior at AFC Wimbledon, helping them to promotion into the Football League.

Loan spells at Fleetwood and Cambridge was followed by a permanent move to Macclesfield, but a year later was signed by Edinburgh and his then newly promoted League 2 Newport.

He leaves Newport after making 63 league appearances for the club.
