Gillingham skipper John Egan says they will be going 'hell for leather' against Shrewsbury

Defender John Egan hopes his goal at Rochdale sparks Gillingham’s revival.

The stand-in skipper headed home the equaliser with 13 minutes left as the Gills claimed a point from the promotion clash on Tuesday night.

Gillingham are without a win in five and are hanging on to the final play-off place with three games to play.

“I have never been so happy after scoring a goal,” said the 23-year-old after his fifth of the season.

“As the ball hit the back of the net I thought that could be the catalyst now for us to turn a corner and drive on for the last three games, hopefully starting on Saturday.

“We want to put all our attentions on Shrewsbury and will be going hell for leather.”

Gillingham have tasted life at the top of League 1 but their current form has seen them slip out of contention for an automatic place. Egan is determined that the side remain in the hunt for play-off success.

He said: “We managed to scrape a draw and possibly could have won it, with pressure after the goal. We could have easily sunk in that second half but we kept at it, rolled our sleeves up and kept going. That’s the team spirit we have.

“We are not going to let this season peter out, we are going to keep fighting.

“We have had a great season, no matter what way you look at it. We are fierce together as a group of lads off the pitch and on it and I think that shows.

“We are going through a tough run at the moment but this is where we have to show our true colours."
